The First People's Hospital of Lianyungang was established in October 1951 and is currently the largest tertiary Grade A general hospital in the eastern Xu-Huai region, serving as an affiliated hospital of Xuzhou Medical University, Clinical Medical College of Nanjing Medical University, the First Affiliated Hospital of Kangda College of Nanjing Medical University, and Lianyungang Occupational Disease Hospital. The hospital serves a population of over 8 million, operates 2,900 beds, and covers a construction area of 600,000 square meters. By 2025, it is projected to handle a total of 2.4865 million patient visits and discharge 138,100 patients annually.
The hospital currently employs 3,708 staff members, including 3,597 healthcare professionals (of whom 1,092 hold senior professional titles). Among them are 19 experts receiving special government allowances at various levels (including 7 recipients of the State Council Special Allowance and 4 provincial-level outstanding young and middle-aged experts), 67 individuals selected for the provincial "333 Project" training program, and 14 recipients of the Provincial Six Major Talent Peak Support Program. The workforce comprises 175 doctoral degree holders and 984 master's degree holders. The institution has established three academician team workstations and over 20 renowned physician practice studios. It offers seven doctoral programs and 35 master's programs, with 13 doctoral supervisors and 173 master's supervisors.
The hospital comprises 61 clinical and medical technology departments, 73 inpatient wards, 1 provincial-level key medical discipline (under development), 2 provincial-level regional medical centers (Provincial Cancer Regional Medical Center and Provincial Dermatology Regional Medical Center), 1 provincial-level medical innovation team under the "Science and Education for Health Enhancement Project" (co-developed by provincial and municipal authorities) (Neurosurgery Department), 22 provincial-level key clinical specialties (including 1 under development), and 1 provincial-level key traditional Chinese medicine specialty. It also houses the National Chest Pain Center, Stroke Center, National Emergency Medical Rescue Base for Nuclear Radiation (Jiangsu Province), Jiangsu Provincial Regional Centers for Chest Pain, Stroke, and Trauma Treatment, Jiangsu Provincial Emergency Medical Rescue Base Hospital, and Provincial Maternal Critical Care Center. The hospital facilities include the Municipal Children's Hospital (a tertiary specialized children's hospital), Municipal Stomatological Hospital, Municipal Brain Hospital, Municipal Cardiovascular Hospital, and Municipal Geriatric Hospital. Advanced medical equipment is available, including the American Accuray CyberKnife, Varian Halcyon accelerator, fourth-generation da Vinci surgical robot, Siemens PET/CT system from Germany, neurosurgical robotic systems, Tianji orthopedic surgical robots, German MicroPort ECMO system, and thoracoabdominal endoscopic surgical control systems.
The hospital boasts a range of cutting-edge research and innovation platforms, including a National Postdoctoral Research Station, a National Clinical Trial Certification Institution for Pharmaceuticals, a National Standardized Residency Training Base, a National Standardized General Practitioner Training Base, a Phase I Drug Clinical Research Center, and a Precision Medicine Laboratory. With the goal of building a smart hospital, it has successfully passed the Level 6 evaluation for electronic medical record functionality (the second in Jiangsu Province and the first in Northern Jiangsu), the Level 5B assessment for standardized maturity of information system interoperability (the highest level), and the accreditation as a tertiary hospital for smart healthcare services. The hospital's internet-based medical service center is among the first of its kind in the province. In recent years, with support from the municipal Party committee and government, the hospital has taken over management of Guannan County First People's Hospital (Guannan Campus) and Lianyungang Fourth People's Hospital (Jiefang East Road Campus), while collaborating with the Lianyungang Economic and Technological Development Zone to establish a joint development zone campus, forming a comprehensive healthcare network comprising five campuses: High-Tech Campus, Tongguan Campus, Guannan Campus, Development Zone Campus, and Jiefang East Road Campus. From 2023 to 2024, the hospital consistently achieved an A+ rating in the national performance monitoring of public hospitals for two consecutive years. It has been designated as a provincial pilot hospital for high-quality development of public hospitals in Jiangsu Province (among a total of 11 municipal-level hospitals under municipal administration).
The hospital has been awarded numerous honors, including National Civilized Unit, Advanced Collective in the National Healthcare System, Advanced Unit in National Health Culture Development, National Demonstration Unit for Traditional Chinese Medicine Services in General Hospitals, National May 1st Labor Award, National May 4th Red Flag Youth League Committee, Advanced Primary-Level Party Organization of Jiangsu Province, Civilized Unit of Jiangsu Province, Advanced Collective in the Jiangsu Provincial Healthcare System, Provincial Safe Demonstration Hospital of Jiangsu Province, and "Healthcare Institution Meeting Public Satisfaction" in Jiangsu Province.
